The First Project...

Hi everyone! My name is Emily, this is my first post on this blog and basically I am going to explain a little bit about the first presentations we did in this amazing class.

The general theme of the project was to do presentations based on the chapters of the book. We were divided into four groups by Professor Sinkoff, each group had about seven members and four chapters were assigned to each group. The presentation had to last 30 minutes or so where all members of the group had to participate. The common dynamic used by each group was to divide the chapters they were assigned so that each chapter was explained by one or two members. We also use visual tools such as videos to explain the topics more effectively.

The first group to present was Group 1. They covered chapter 1, 2, 3 and 5; and I'm going to give a little summary of what was discussed. The first chapter was about speaking effectively in public, that is better to converse than just speak to the audience, so you can make them feel encouraged to respond to the speaker. You can also use methods such as knowing your audience, practicing your speech, using body language, etc. Chapter two dealt with confidence and stress when you are the speaker. Basically, sometimes we can feel stressed, nervous or anxious during a speech, to avoid this you have to prepare well beforehand, you can get familiar with the surroundings and practice before you give the speech. One of the most important things is a positive attitude. Chapter three was about being a good listener, this include the 6 components of listening: hearing, which can be through actual noise or vibrations; understanding, being open-minded; remembering, in other words being able to recall what you heard; Interpreting; evaluating, were you examine the message; and finally, responding. Chapter five was about how to be confident in delivering a speech. Tips such as preparing the topic, having good posture and pleasing the audience. Overall I think their presentation was very colorful and cute. Also, I loved the image of a little dog that they used in one of their slides in the presentation, the colors, everything was really good and I really enjoyed the video “Why Public Speaking Makes You Panic”.

Group 2 covered chapters 4, 6, 7 and 8. Chapter four was ab
out developing your purpose and topic. The purpose of a speech could be to inform, to persuade, or to enhance a special occasion. Brainstorming is used to select possible topics, techniques that you can use in your speech, what sources you would need. Also, when selecting your topic you must consider your own interests, what sources you can use to develop the content of your speech, a time limit for your speech, and the setting and occasion. Moreover, you need to develop a thesis statement to make your speech easier to develop and communicate. Chapter six, once you have selected your speech topic you must research information on your topic and this consists of three phases. Phase one is to prepare for the search which is to identify what you already know and what possible sources of information you can use. Phase two is gathering the information, basically, looking for your topic on different sources such as the internet, Youtube, a library, etc. You can also get information from interviews that others had made or either make your own interview, for that you would need to develop an interview outline. Phase three is about evaluating the sources of information, their validity, accuracy and relevance. Chapter seven was about supporting the ideas of the speech. Some types of supporting materials are narratives, which are used to engage the audience; examples, are used to personalize your topic; testimony, are used to enhance the audience's credibility; and Statistics, are used to demonstrate the scope of a problem. The last chapter was about organizing and outlining a speech, basically identify the main parts of a speech, and use the guiding principles of clarity, relevance, and balance to develop the main points of a speech.

Personally, I was part of Group 2, for this project we made a group chat to be able to communicate in a better way and in effect that is what we did, we divided the chapters, created the presentation and that is how we started to work. We also met in zoom to review the presentation, make some changes and improvements. I really liked working in this team, I feel that we all managed to communicate very well, in general our atmosphere in the group was very proactive and it was something that I liked a lot. So, apart from the fact that this was a project that we had to develop in a short period of time, one week, it was very interesting and dynamic, I think this was the best way to start the class of Public Speaking.

Group 3 covered chapters 9, 10, 11, and 12. Chapter nine was about developing the introduction of a speech, getting your audience's attention, establishing your purpose and thesis, and previewing your main points on the speech. Also, this chapter was about developing the conclusion, where you need to reinforce your purpose and review the main points and also provide a closure. Chapter ten and eleven were about using language effectively and integrating visual media to the presentation. In other words when doing your speech you may choose words that convey your ideas accurately while avoiding jargon, slang, idioms, euphemisms, etc. Chapter twelve was about delivering your speech. There are four speech delivery methods: impromptu speaking, is speaking without planning, rehearsing, or scripted like an everyday conversation; extemporaneous speaking, is when you research, organize or rehearse the speech; manuscript speaking and memorized speaking. It also covered the factors that influence the delivery of the speech like, the culture, gender, dialect, fluency, etc.

The last group in general talked about informative speech, persuasive speech, and how to understand an argument. They describe the characteristics of an informative speech and explain how informative differs from persuasive speech and also, they describe the different types of informative speeches. Moreover, how to distinguish between persuasive speeches of fact, value, and policy.

Finally, this post is a summary of all the group presentations of the first project and also a bit of my experience, I am very pleased with this project I feel that my group did really well and we managed to connect in a good way, I hope that the other projects will be as or more entertaining, dynamic and interactive as this one. I really enjoyed it!
