 First Project Summary!

Hi! I'm Jasmine Diaz and i'll be summarizing mine and my fellow classmates project. I believe we did an amazing job on explaining all about public speaking.

In Chapter 1 I learned that it is better to converse with the audience instead of just talking to them. There is a better chance to connect with them and to treat them like one of your friends. This chapter had the five arts of public speaking, and it was helpful once I did my own presentation, especially when they spoke about our life skills. These slides were able to boost my confidence. It was also said that you should always be yourself. One of the other slides in chapter one spoke about Spheres of Communication. It was an amazing explanation about communication because connecting with your audience is important. Chapter one also gave five key points about presenting your speech focused on the audience, speaker, message, noise, and feedback. These key points are important when you present or listen to a presentation.

Chapter 2 was more about how you will feel once you are presenting your speech. Chapter two explained very well how it is always better to be confident and be organized while conveying your speech. Also try to grab your audience's attention, for instance by making a joke, this will help your audience be intrigued by your speech. Another fact that they had said was how you can make a speech about something that you enjoy so then you will have more confidence in your speech. They had also added a video that felt very relatable because someone people including me have a little stage fright. The video explained the stages of presenting, so it was extremely helpful. You just need a positive attitude to give a good speech.

Chapter 3 was great because of the six steps of listening to someone's speech or having a conversation with someone. The six steps were hearing, understanding, remembering, evaluating, and responding these steps explain how people can easily get distracted by anything like noise or someone does not share the same belief cause sometimes people will not listen to your reasoning because they do not have the same view of the topic. Chapter three also had a video of a brief explanation of how to be a better listener.

Chapter 5 started with a brief explanation of how to structure your presentation and how you should ask audience questions and visualize and limit the key points of what you will discuss in your presentation. They had a splendid video explaining how to get over your fear of presenting and things people can experience while being on stage.

Chapter 4 was mine and my fellow class mate, we spoke about developing your purpose and topic. I explained the four ways of speaking, for instance speaking to inform, speaking to persuade, speaking at special occasions, and keeping your general purpose in mind. These four ways of speaking depend on who your audience is and the location where you are doing your speech. I also spoke about brainstorming and all the techniques you will need when making your speech you will need to find your sources and look for topics for your speech. Brainstorming also has 4 major rules that you will need when making your speech which are to generate multiple ideas, write down every idea, evaluate ideas, and be creative and imaginative. The second part of chapter four talked about making a great outline and how to stay focused and organized.

Chapter 6 was an amazing presentation. There was a lot of key information about how to research your topics. It showed how and where to find research material and how you should become very informed when it comes to drawing out information in your speech. They also spoke about interviewing. It helped with how you should organize your information and to think of a strategy when you are interviewing the other person. To have a great interview you should pick an appropriate setting, review your guide, ask one question at a time, and monitor your verbal and nonverbal cues.

Chapter 7 spoke about narratives and how narratives tend to resonate with their audience beliefs and values. The chapter helped me understand that if I personalize my topics in my speech, I will be able to help the listeners understand why I choose my topic. It also explained how other people tell their story and how everyone has their own concepts and beliefs. The other part of chapter seven explained how three diverse types of sources speakers tend to use experts, lay people, and celebrities which I found remarkably interesting as well as different testimonies.

Chapter 8 was more about how to construct your speech. It starts with your introduction, then you move on to your body, then a transition, and finally your conclusion. They explained how to organize your body in your speech and how to connect your ideas with your transitions. The part of the prestation explained how to outline your speech and organize your ideas. This chapter was trying to help us give our audience a clear message and to keep them well informed.

Chapter 9 was explaining how to begin and end your speech. It had a great explanation of how to develop your introduction and how to catch the audience's attention. They explained how to use attention getters like starting with a strong question or stating great facts that will intrigue your audience. This chapter describes how to establish credibility and preview your main points by outlining what will be covered and to provide great closure so you will end with a great speech.

Chapter 10 was about the fundamentals of language, language culture, and gender. The fundamentals of language are arbitrary, ambiguous, abstract, and active. These four fundamentals helped me understand that words can have multiple meanings and while time passes languages start to evolve so it is especially important to know how to convey your speeches properly. Language is such a massive thing cause there's diverse ways to impact someone's life. When it comes to gender it is always better to always be equal and unbiased because you do not want to exclude certain people. The second part of chapter ten informed us the several types of spoken language. It explained how you can use inclusive language or visual language to better your audience imagination and to better convey your message. Another thing they explained was that there's diverse ways to catch people's attention and try to avoid slang or inappropriate words when presenting your speech, avoid offensive language.

Chapter 11 was very intriguing because it spoke about presentation media. It explained the basic visual design, which is to keep it simple, emphasize only key ideas, show what you cannot say so like graphs, pictures anything visual, and make sure to use large lettering so then it is better for your audience to see. It is highly effective when it comes to slides and videos because it helps your audience visualize your presentation. I learned it is crucial to understand your equipment and test it beforehand so you will not find any complications. The second part of chapter eleven spoke more about using other visual and audio media. Videos can increase how much listeners remember from your speech and can change the mood. Giving handouts can help people understand your speech as well. Setting up early and arriving early will also get you ready and prepared for your speech.

Chapter 12 was more about how to deliver your speech. Do not present without planning, always try to memorize your speech. There are factors that influence deliveries like culture. Some cultures can find the things you say rude. But then we have gender some audience judge people from their gender. We also have disability in some speakers use sign language to convey their speech and someone people have dialects that where pronunciation comes to play. They also talk about controlling your breathing and speaking loudly enough so the audience can hear you. Always try to keep a good posture and never give your back to the audience. Chapter twelve part two speaks more about how to manage your audience. Researching your audience to make sure to design your method to their needs. You also want to involve your audience so they can engage with your speech, also remember to be ready for Q and A.

Chapter 13 revolved around informative speaking. It explained the characteristics of informative speech, so it had limited scope. Meaning that you must be knowledgeable about your topic, then you must ensure that you will not lose the message you are trying to convey, be personally meaningful so your audience can relate to your speech and be accurate its always important to have information that is factual. To create an effective informative speech always try to inform to educate and use presentation media to inform.

Chapter 15 is about understanding arguments. They informed types of claims that were conclusions, premise, and evidence. They also spoke about the four appeals which start with logos, logos is facts and statistics, pathos is emotional proof, ethos is speakers' credibility, and mythos is cultural beliefs. Then they explained the reasoning. Reasoning provides the bridge between claim and evidence. There are four diverse types of reasoning, there's deductive reasoning, inductive reasoning, casual reasoning, and analogical reasoning. They also spoke about fallacies, which is an error in making arguments. You can find fallacies in claims, evidence, and reasonings.

Chapter 16 described the fundamental concepts and principles of distance speaking. This involves delivering a structured presentation from one location to the other using communication technology. They used videoconferences, graphical online presentations, and telephone meetings. The advantages of videoconferences are that it enhances people's engagement to your speech, graphical online presentations focus on visual clarity and there is no need for videos, and telephone meetings are meant to be simple and more effective it also helps the focus on the person's voice.

Chapter 17 talks about types of special occasions speeches like speech of introduction it is when introducing the main speaker to the audience, then we have acceptance speech's which is given by individuals who are being recognized, honored, or rewarded and finally we have nominations speeches which are focused on qualifications or accomplishments of a particular person. We do have tributes, roast, toast, after dinner speeches, public testimonies, and elevator speeches. Tributes are to give credit, respect, admiration, or gratitude to a person or group like birthdays, parties, and weddings. A roast is a type of speech that exposes a guest of honor, or it targets a specific person. A toast is a speech that celebrates one's accomplishments. A dinner speech is more like a speech that has a goal in mind. A public testimony speech is a speech that is to the public and an elevator speech is mostly for work environments. The second part of chapter 17 explained more of how to work with a group in a presentation like using symposium, team reports, and panel discussions. These are things the group members will do individually so the group can interact more effectively with the audience.

This presentation was incredibly fun to complete
, me and my fellow classmates did an incredible job explaining the several types of speeches and how to better our public speaking experience I now have a better understanding on presenting because of all these helpful and well explained info that my classmates had showed us.
