Second Project Summary

For this project, we were in the same groups as the first one, and Professor Sinkoff gave each group a topic. Each group needed to make an agenda, a brochure, and a presentation. One person from each group also had to record a short, one-minute video explaining the brochure, which was shown at an event on October 21st. This project was an interesting and challenging experience since there was a lot of research to be made, but luckily I was partnered up with an amazing group who helped me along the way!

Group 4 presented first, and their topic was "Gender Equality." They shared key moments in history that led to today’s ideas of equality. For example, they talked about how women in ancient Egypt had certain rights, like inheriting property, compared to women in ancient Greece and Rome who had fewer rights. They also covered important events like the first Women’s Rights Convention and the 19th Amendment. I found their presentation very informative, especially in showing how much society has changed over time.

Group 3’s topic was "Education Policies." They began by defining education policies as the rules and laws that shape schools and learning. They explained how President Andrew Johnson created the Department of Education, but it was later reduced because it was seen as too powerful. They also compared recent education views: former President Donald Trump supported school choice to give parents more options, while Vice President, Kamala Harris focused on teacher pay and better funding for schools that need it. I thought this group did a great job explaining the different policies and why education is important.

Group 2, which was my group, had the topic "The Electorate and the Election Process." We explained how voting began, from early informal decision-making to Athens' democratic system. We talked about how voting rights have grown over time and how voting rules differ across the world. For example, many countries in Europe register voters automatically, while Australia requires voting by law. We also discussed how education impacts voting, with people who have higher education levels being less likely to fall for misinformation. This project helped us explore how election systems work and why they’re important.

Group 1’s topic was "Immigration Policies." They explained the difference between refugees and asylum seekers and discussed reasons people migrate, like escaping war or poverty. They also talked about recent U.S. immigration policies, like Trump’s use of Title 42 during COVID-19, which led to many deportations, and Biden’s continuation of the policy. They explained how Trump’s “zero-tolerance” policy led to family separations and how Biden later reunited many of these families. They did an amazing job and their explanation was very clear and well thoughtout.

Overall, the presentations were amazing! Everyone did plenty of research and were well informed of what they were talking about. Of all the presentations, I enjoyed Group 4 the most, though everyone did an excellent job. This project was really enjoyable because of the interesting topics, and it was nice working with the same groups as before. I’m looking forward to the next project and working in a new way with everyone!
